When you think of March holidays, what comes to mind first? St. Patrick\u2019s Day! But March has some other important national events, and one of those is \u201cFix a Leak Week,<\/a>\u201d which takes place from March 14 to March 20.<\/p>\n

What is \u201cFix a Leak Week\u201d?<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s a week that the EPA\u2019s WaterSense program designate to help draw homeowners\u2019 attention to the waste that even small leaks in a home can create, and how to detect them. You can of course arrange to fix leaks in your residential plumbing any time of the year\u2014and you should!\u2014but this week helps spread information about leak repair and detection to assist people with understanding better why stopping household leaks is so important.<\/p>\n

For example, the amount of water that leaks in homes across the U.S. waste every year is more than 1 trillion<\/em> (yes, \u201ctrillion\u201d with a \u201ct\u201d) gallons. That\u2019s the equivalent of water use for more than 11 million homes. Your home may have leaks in it right now that are contributing to this enormous drain on the public water supply.<\/p>\n

But if I Have Hidden Leaks, How Do I Know to Have Them Repaired?<\/h3>\n

That\u2019s part of what Fix a Leak Week is all about! It helps homeowners identify when they have leak problems so they know to contact plumbers to arrange for repairs. For example, check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no one in the house is using water (late afternoon is a good time). If the meter changes, then you probably have a leak somewhere. Call professional plumbers, and they\u2019ll track down the source and fix the problem.<\/p>\n
