You\u2019ll probably do a good share of entertaining at your home during the end of the year, and we want to remind you about how to best treat <a href=\"\/plumber\/garbage-disposals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">your garbage disposal<\/a> during the festive season. One tough Thanksgiving dinner can wipe out a sink disposal that\u2019s already has a few years behind it. But if you\u2019re careful, there\u2019s no reason you shouldn\u2019t have a disposal that keeps pace with you through to the New Year\u2014and beyond.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Here\u2019s what you should keep away from the disposal<\/h2>\n<p>(Aside from your hand, of course.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fats, oils, and grease \u2013 <\/strong>These are the <em>big<\/em> enemies during the holiday season. If you are going to be doing a great deal of cooking at this time of year, you\u2019ll have plenty of cooking liquids you\u2019ll want to simply pour down the drain. But these \u201cliquids\u201d turn to solids when they cool, and this can gum up a disposal fast!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chicken and turkey bones \u2013 <\/strong>Well, <em>any<\/em> bones, but these are the ones we expect you\u2019ll have to deal with. A garbage disposal doesn\u2019t \u201cchop\u201d down food, it instead grinds it so it can go down the drains. This grinding action can\u2019t handle something like meat bones!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fibrous vegetables \u2013<\/strong> This includes anything that\u2019s \u201cstringy,\u201d like asparagus and celery. Onion skins are a problem as well. The fibers can easily become entangled in the mechanisms of the disposal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Any non-organic material \u2013<\/strong> We understand that during the holidays in the kitchen you\u2019re often in a hurry, so maybe you just want to throw some plastic pieces from a food container or other bits of trash into the disposal and forget about it. But the disposal isn\u2019t designed for non-organic waste.
