Protect Your Drains From FOG

If you were popping into this blog to learn about how your drains could get misty and foggy, then we’re sorry to upset you. That’s not the kind of fog we’re going to be talking about!

FOG, in this case, stands for fats, oils, and grease, and it’s one of the main culprits for drain clogs and other issues throughout the country.

FOG isn’t just a problem, it’s a recurring problem that you can’t just simply escape. All of the food we cook uses some kind of fat, whether it’s butter or vegetable oil, and sending that down the drain just isn’t an option.

Today, we’ll talk about why FOG can be so bad for your drain and also why a professional plumber can be your best friend when FOG starts making your life worse.

Protect your home from FOG as well as you can, and invest in professional drain cleaning in Cleves, OH on a regular basis.

What Is FOG?

FOG, as we mentioned earlier, is any type of fat, oil, or grease that might accidentally get sent down your drain. When you’re washing dishes or cleaning pans at the end of a nice meal, you rarely think about what that liquid you’re sending down the drain is made out of. However, if it’s something like olive oil, butter, or bacon grease, then it constitutes as FOG.

The main difference between fats, oils, and grease, and just dirty kitchen water, is the fact that it’s a fatty liquid and not water. Fats can solidify at a much warmer temperature than water, which means your plumbing system is a ripe area for them to turn from liquid to solid in a fast amount of time.

What Do You Do With FOG?

That’s a very good question. Normally, one of the best solutions for FOG is to collect it into a can or jar so that it can be disposed of in the trash when it’s cooled down. But, as any home chefs might know, things aren’t always as cut and dry as that.

For instance, you might have limited space in your kitchen and can’t just keep a jar of fat around. Well, in that case, you can use paper towels to soak up the grease or fat and toss those into the trash.

How FOG Can Be a Problem

When you accidentally flush FOG down the drain, it stays separated from the water in your pipes. It doesn’t dissolve and will remain there unless it either gets flushed out of the system or solidifies.

If it gets cold and turns solid, it’s going to feel like you’ve got a solid object in your drain that’s preventing wastewater from exiting. This is a big problem and one that can only be alleviated with drain cleaning services.
